Of the many types and antitypes of the Old Testament, Elijah stands out as a prominent example, pattern, shadow, or to use a modern expression, “template” for the days just preceding the Second Coming of Christ.
Elijah was used as a type by Jesus Himself, who said that John the Baptist was Elijah who was to come:
“Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear (Matthew 11:11-15)!
What is the significance of this ancient prophet, what does he have to do with us right now who are living just before the Second Coming of Jesus?
